Fishing for photos

Animal, TravelLoz MooreComment

Last week I took a week off and visited the New Forest with my other half Mandy and her brother Jonny and his wife Lisa.

We stayed in a great chalet complete with hot tub overlooking the woods.

The highlight of the week for Jonny was taking me night fishing to Hordle Lakes, a beautiful spot he had visited a few years before.

Jonny had brought all the fishing gear and I had a two man bivvy and plenty of layers of clothing particularly as the weather forecast didn't look great.

We were all set up next to Bob's Lake by about 1pm on Monday and the girls left to go shopping.

Jonny caught 3 Bream virtually straight away but it was carp that he was really after. He valiantly tried to introduce me to fishing but I was more interested in all the wildlife happening in front of me and taking photos of it. I don't know anything really about fish or birds but was fascinated watching the mallard ducks and black-headed gulls wheeling around the lakes trying to pick up food.

There were several families of very small duckings following their Mothers around and I sadly managed to just catch a photo of a Magpie stealing one of the ducklings without its Mother noticing. However I'm pleased to say that looking at successive photos I took of that bit of action the duckling seemed to have got away!

As the day wore on a big bird flew over and landed by the next lake and we realised that it was a Heron.

We had taken down the phone number of a local Indian takeaway and at 6pm rang them and ordered 2 Madras curries to be delivered to the lake gates. I walked down to pick them up and just as I got back found Jonny fighting something a lot bigger on his line - he had found his first carp of the day.

No sooner had he put that back when he caught another on his second rod. I was beginning to worry that the curry would go cold before we could eat it, but it was fine.

Jonny tried different types of bait during the day and the gulls and ducks were more than happy to collect any bits that were surplus and sitting on the surface.

We finally got to bed at about 12pm not longer after Jonny caught his biggest fish ever, just after the sun went down.

I really enjoyed my introduction to night fishing although next time I would go in Summer when the risk of a frosty night is much reduced!

Chart Success

On 6th December 2014 I blogged about recording a video for two friends, Ross Darby and Lizzy Coughlan.

Ross had written a song called Devil and The Deep Blue Sea. He decided to release as a single on a budget of £99 with a view to getting it in the top 40 - a massive ask you would think.

Ross wanted to show other local musicians that you can do this without the help of a major record label,. and to show music venues how important it is to support local artists

The video helped him kick off a social media program and a very busy list of gigs over 6 weeks to raise the profile of his challenge.

The aim was to get as many pre-orders as possible before its official release on 29th March 2015.

Well, yesterday was launch day and I took a few photographs at the gig last night to celebrate the launch.

Amazingly the single got into the 30 of iTunes downloads on day one!

Ross and Lizzy now have to wait for next Sunday to see where it has reached in the official charts.

Albany Theatre Anniversary Party

CorporateLoz MooreComment

The Albany Theatre is an impressive Art-Deco style theatre residing behind the superb façade of the old Coventry Technical College building.  The building was designed in 1919, and the theatre opened in 1935. Known to its regulars as the Butts Theatre, it closed its doors behind the last audience member in January 2009, following the acquisition of the (then-named) City College site by developers.

The Theatre re-opened its doors on 1st February 2013, supported by Coventry City Council and a vast team of highly-valued volunteers.  A considerable amount of work has taken place behind the scenes; revamping, replacing and renovating all services and facilities to provide safe and up-to-date equipment, an impressive array of dressing rooms, new sound and lighting systems and a full-height fly tower.

The Albany Theatre is ‘home’ to a range of local schools, musical theatre societies and community groups, as well as programming a complementary range of professional productions from comedy, live bands and tribute acts to dance and children’s productions – not forgetting our traditional annual pantomime.

I help out with the Theatre so went to the party to celebrate the second anniversary of its re-opening. It was a great opportunity to try out my new 85mm prime lens! Here are some photos of the night.

Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox

MusicLoz MooreComment

The story started on Facebook (it's part of everything these days scarily). Anyway Mandy and I came across a great version of "All About That Bass" which we then played to everyone at Christmas via YouTube on the TV. This was the first time that we had heard of Scott Bradlee and his Postmodern Jukebox. Here is that version which has had more than 10 million views on YouTube.

So my birthday is in January and my present from my two daughters was 2 tickets for us to go and see PMJ at The Institute in Birmingham on 14th February.

We had never been to this venue before so arrived at about 6.30pm when the tickets said the doors opened. We were a bit disconcerted when the taxi dropped us off to find a queue that went up the road and wrapped around the corner to disappear up the side street. However when we joined it the queue moved quickly and we were soon inside.

The code on our tickets apparently meant we were in a gallery area on the second floor. We could see why everyone got there early as it was first come first served for seats. We nabbed the last two which were effectively bar stools in from of a shelf where we could put drinks - ideal and a great spot.

It took a while to get served at the nearest small bar to where we were seated but it didn't matter as we had plenty of time.

The support act which came on at about 7.15 lasted 10 minutes and was 3 dancers which were actually part of the main show when it started. Not brilliant but they went down well.

Then Scott and PMJ came on at about 7.30. Scott is the founder and arranger etc who plays a keyboard on the side of the stage built into the frame of an upright piano.

The core band is bass, drums and two brass players in addition to Scott. He then has various singers who come on to perform the different songs. The musicians and singers were of the highest standard and put on a proper show rather than just singing. In addition to the singers was an excellent tap dance guy and a lad described as the 'best tambourine player in the world'.

A black guy called Michael performed the role of MC brilliantly as well as being a top class singer in his own right. Casey Abrams also knocked out some great vocals as well as occasionally sharing double bass duties.

There were two brilliant girl singers, one of whom was Morgan James who has a superb range. Here she is on Vevo

Their encore number was predictably the song that started this story for us - I captured this video on my pocket camera.

It brought the house down and was a great way to finish. The whole group made their way out to meet and greet by the merchandise stand which was a nice touch.

All in all a fantastic birthday present.

KING Phoenix

MusicLoz MooreComment

I felt very privileged to be invited along as Coventry band KING Phoenix launched live on BBC Coventry and Warwickshire.

Original King members Jim Lantsbery, Tony Wall & Mike Roberts teamed up with Tony Dangerfield & Matt Hart to play as King Phoenix.

The band played 5 numbers live and in between Vic Minett from BBC interviewed family members and friends who remembered King from the 80s.

My photos are here: http://www.lozmoore.com/king-phoenix/

Mike Roberts even brought his original pair of their trade-marked multi-coloured Doc Martens out of the wardrobe to wear!

New pocket camera - Sony RX100 iii

CamerasLoz MooreComment

Just taken delivery of a Sony RX100 iii. I wanted a compact camera that I can always have on me. My Olympus E-PL5 is great but not quite small enough to fit in trouser, coat or shirt pocket.

The Sony looks very promising. Although the sensor is smaller at 1 inch than the micro four thirds sensor of the Olympus it promises to offer great performance. The built in zoom lens is fast with a maximum aperture of 1.8 at the lower end of the zoom range. The icing on the cake would have been a touch sensitive screen like the E-PL5 but life is never perfect.

Wi-fi connection to iPad or iPhone works well - very easy to set up and transfer images.

One feature which I think was unintended by Sony is the pop up flash which you can tilt up with one finger to achieve bounce flash.

Very early days yet, but a couple of low light photos from the first few days of ownership

Warwick Castle Wedding

I was invited to a friend's wedding at Warwick Castle a week or so ago. The venue was excellent for a winter wedding and the food was marvellous. Took my pocket camera - Olympus EPL-5 with 45mm f1.8 lens; here are a few photos from the day.

Christmas photos

Loz MooreComment

Everybody takes photos at Christmas whether it be with phone or camera.

This year I only went and found my camera once over the Christmas period and at the time had had a few 'bevvies' which didn't help. However I did like the photos below of our little niece Anya and her Dad Andre

Ross Darby and Lizzy Coughlan

Really enjoyed putting this quick video together of a great song from Ross and Lizzy. Filmed last Sunday in a quiet area of the Artisan restaurant in Coventry.

Looking forward to capturing some more tracks with these two great local musicians.

All done in one take; used three cameras to get a few angles and caught the audio with a Zoom H4N.

Added a smidgen of reverb as the sound in the room was so dry.

hopefully you will be able to view this Facebook video from this link

Snatched on iPhone from an Open Mic session at The Establishment, I love this song. This was only their third or fourth performance - hopefully many more good things to come from them.

Fargo

Travel, MusicLoz MooreComment

Fargo Village in Coventry opened at the weekend and promises to bring a whole new dimension to the city offering niche and unique retailers, artists’ studios, creative workspace, crafts, cafes, markets and entertainment space. Affordable rents will allow new businesses to set up, thrive and survive in an attractive environment, in a community of  like minded people.

Fargo is bringing a piece of the London cool scene of Camden and Brick Lane to Coventry. Twenty years ago these were run down areas of London but with investment into the creative industries they have now become major attractions bringing in visitors from all over the world and in turn supporting the local economy. To emulate some of that success here would give Coventry a huge boost in perception and appeal to locals and visitors. Fargo Village will inject energy and fun into Coventry.
